Chivas Youngsters Anticipate Barcelona Challenge

Three regulars won't be around for Saturday's game against Barcelona but the youngsters who stand to play in the match are excited for the challenge Barca present.

Chivas de Guadalajara will skip the Jornada 3 game date to take on a friendly against FC Barcelona at Candlestick Park in San Francisco on Saturday. The two squads have met on previous occasions as part of Barça’s preseason tour, with the last encounter ending in a 5-2 win for the Catalan side in 2008.

El Rebaño will be without Alberto Medina, Johnny Magallon, and Aaron Galindo as they are currently with the Mexican national team, but the younger Chivas players see it as an opportunity to shine against some of the biggest opposition in the world.

So far in the Apertura 2009 tournament Chivas has had some defensive problems, but Marco Fabian feels it’ll be a good test to see what level Chivas are currently at.

“Of course this comes at a good time to see what level we’re at. It’s a good test to play against Barcelona because if we win we’ll know that we’re at the level of team that has a great record,” said Fabian. “We can (win), it’s not impossible. It can give us confidence to get back those points that we’ve let slip (in the league).”

After the friendly against Barcelona, Chivas will face off against newly promoted Queretaro.

“Winning would make the responsibility of improving in the league much greater," Fabian said. "It gives you the confidence to improve, and that’s needed to better handle things. The pressure that the game gives you can come at a good time, before facing Queretaro, so we don’t let any more points go by and we can get the win.”

With several lapses of the team, the squad worked on several new formations for future games.

“We’re working on playing more openly, and trying to adapt to all the systems that Paco (Ramirez) will use. We need to be a little more worried about not conceding goals, and also look for more goals in our favor.”

Fabian is excited to face off against Barcelona, and hopes to have a fair showing against the European team.

“Going up against the players that you’ve seen on TV since a young team, you aren’t always at the level to do that. That’s where you can have more fun and show that you can play at their level. I’ve always admired all those players, and several play with Barcelona,” added Marco Fabian. “To go against Messi, who to me is the best player in the world, is a good experience something to always remember. You could even have a better game than him; with that mentality and attitude we have to arrive to the game on Saturday.”
