The Mexican Football Federation (FMF) confirmed on Thursday that Rafael Marquez would not be available for the game against the United States on August 12th at the Azteca Stadium.

Javier Aguirre will not call up an additional player in the Barcelona defender’s absence.

The defender suffered a torn calf muscle in Barcelona‘s practice before facing the Seattle Sounders, and is expected to be out for 10 to 15 days.

“Obviously, it’s not the best news. I spoke to him (Marquez) yesterday. He had a small glimmer of hope that it would be a small injury but today it was confirmed with the manager (Josep Guardiola) that it would be impossible for him to play,” said Aguirre in an interview with W Radio.

There had been questions on the availability of players such as Marquez who was recovering from injury, and Nery Castillo who hadn’t had playing time with his club Shakhtar Donestk.

“I was prepared for the Rafa situation, and not for Nery’s so no, I will not call up anyone else. For now I’m left with 19, and we’ll wait for Nery to arrive. I’ll have one for the stands. We anticipated that, and we’re content.”
