Franco Without A Club But Still On Tri
Criticism arose over the fact that Guillermo Franco is on Aguirre’s roster for Wednesday’s game. Franco has no current club and his physical state was in question.
His physical status is questionable but Franco feels confident he will be ready come August the 12th.
“About me having or not having rhythm…I’ve been working with the national team and I have carried out a work out plan that they have given me. The ideal thing would be to be in a club playing but things haven’t worked out like that,” Franco said in a press conference.
Monterrey looked to be the front runners to pick up Franco on the offseason following his exit from Villarreal. Things haven’t gone as planned though and as to which club will eventually pick him up is something that is still up in the air.
“I am very calm and I said that last week,” said Franco. “I am calm waiting to see with whom I can work something out. It’s something I would have liked taken care of but things just haven’t happened that way.
Guillermo Franco was part of the Gold Cup-winning team that beat the U.S. in the final. Although he came into the tournament a bit out of shape, he slowly regained his form and eventually got on the pitch. Franco scored the fifth and final goal against the U.S., helping his team regain the Gold Cup. Franco showed great form in the Gold Cup, but is stirring up controversy in Mexico and it is something he doesn’t understand.
“I have nothing to demonstrate,” expressed Franco. “I am very calm but I don’t understand why so much is said about me being chosen to be on the roster. The one making the decisions here is the coach and up to now he has confided in me and that’s why I’m here. I don’t feel any pressure because I don’t have to show anything to anyone.
“I think everyone knows who Guillermo Franco is, what he can do, what he can’t do. The most important thing for me is the staff and my teammates…. If we start to talk about things that generate controversy on the team, then we’d be here for a month,” admitted Franco.
Franco appeared three times and scored once for Mexico in the Gold cup. The Argentine born striker won the goal scoring title in the 2004 Mexican Apertura.
