No Goals But Ojbective Reached Nonetheless
Cruz Azul did not score a goal against Herediano but advanced to the CCL group stage, a fact that pleased manager Enrique Meza.
Meza sent out backups to try and help la Maquina continue its goal binge but instead the backups tied Herediano 0-0 in a CONCACAF Champions League qualifier on Wednesday in Estadio Azul.
The result was what mattered the most, Meza said.
"The objective was to get through to the next stage and we achieved that," Meza said in a post-game press conference. "It's great to participate in international tournaments."
Cruz Azul scored six goals a week ago in Costa Rica and won the first leg 6-2, using most of their regulars. On Sunday, Cruz Azul beat Pumas 3-0 in league play but the offense vanished on Wednesday.
"We did not play the way we wanted but we're through to the next round," Meza said. "We won the series and did so with players who had not been playing regularly so that gives me a lot of joy."
Several players nearly came close to scoring but the marksmanship was off.
"We had some clear scoring chances but could not finish," Meza said. "I liked the way the players worked with each other but only at times. I liked their effort. You can say what you want but to me they were dynamic and gave a strong effort."
