Pachuca Drop Seven On Jalapa In CCL Rout
Ulises Mendivil had a hat trick as Pachuca tore apart Deportivo Jalapa 7-1 in a CONCACAF Champions League qualifying series.
Ulises Mendevil scored three of Pachuca's seven goals to pace the rout.
First Half
It didn't take long for Pachuca to find the back of the net. Just four minutes in, Gimenez struck. Paul Aguilar found the ball on the right side of the field and sent a high-arching cross to the far post. With the ball floating softly towards open space, Gimenez ran onto it and easily headed the ball into the back of the net.
The goal gave Pachuca a comfortable four-goal edge in the aggregate score and, with road goals the tiebreakers, instantly forced Jalapa to look for a five-goal victory.
Gimenez also showed his passing skills in the 14th minute when he fed Ulises Mendivil for Pachuca's second goal. Gregorio Torres started the play with a well-placed through ball. From the center line, Torres placed a ball into a wide-open space along the left side of the field. Jalapa's defense allowed Gimenez to roam alone into the area as they scrambled to recover. Gimenez had space and time and picked out Mendivil from a crowd of Tuzos. Mendivil easily knocked the ball into the back fo the net.
Not even a quarter-hour into the match and Pachuca had a five-goal lead, and led the second leg by 2-0.
Jalapa nearly pulled a goal back in the 19th minute when Luis Lopez struck a free kick on goal. The ball skimmed off Marco Ivan Perez's head and went towards the goal. It got past 'keeper Carlos Velasquez and hit the crossbar. The ball bounced but did not cross the goal line and bounced out into play, eventually cleared away.
Jalapa appeared to gain a bit of confidence from that near-goal, though, and started to possess the ball more and pieced together some passes deep in Pachuca's third.
However, nothing came of that brief flurry and Pachuca had another goal before the end of the first half.
Aguilar started the play of when he stole a pass near the center of the field. He sprinted down the right flank unmarked and slipped a ball to the front of the goal. The ball made it to the back post and Mendivil easily knocked the ball over the goal line.
Jalapa eventually pulled a goal back. Pachuca 'keeper Rodolfo Cota showed why Miguel Calero's job is safe when he knocked forward Rodrgio de Leon down inside the penalty area. Mario Piñeyro easily converted the penalty as he knocked the shot to Cota's right while the 'keeper dived to his left.
Second Half
As if Pachuca needed more help from the lousy Guatemalan side, Pachuca received a penalty kick five minutes into the second half. Gimenez knifed through Jalapa's defense and Lopez grabbed Gimenez on his way to the goal. Jalapa 'keeper Ricardo Jerez parried the ball away.
Pachuca, however, won a corner kick. Pachuca's Gregorio Torres whipped a ball to the front of the goal. Aguilar was left alone in front of the goal and re-directed the pass with the outside of his right foot and into the back of the net. The goal gave Pachuca a 4-1 lead in the game and a 7-1 advantage in the aggregate score.
Edgar Benitez replaced Gimenez in the 59th minute. Benitez nearly won a penalty kick but his trip inside the penalty area was deemed a dive. Nonetheless, Benitez got his goal anyway. In the 64th minute, Torres once again fired a splendid cross from the left flank. Benitez elevated for the ball and headed it into the back of the net. Pachuca led 5-1.
It was Mendivil who got the sixth goal of the match. Luis Montes, who replaced Gerardo Rodriguez at halftime, sent a ball to Mendivil in front of the area. Mendivil easily tapped the ball across the goal line to complete his hat trick.
Mendivil showed he can pass as well. in the 87th minute Mendivil found the ball on the right side of the box. He floated a ball to Gabriel Caballero, who was unmarked on the edge of the six-yard box. Caballero easily headed the ball into the back of the net.
The strike was the last in Pachuca's goal-binge. Pachuca advance to Group 1 along with Houston Dynamo of MLS, Isidro Metapan of El Salvador and the winner of the Arabe Unido-Olimpia series.
