Santos Struggle But Beat Indios To Earn First Win Of Season

A late penalty helps Santos defeat a defensive-minded Indios squad by 1-0 in Estadio Corona.

Santos earned their first win of the Apertura 2009 season with a 1-0 win over Indios. The match was difficult for Santos as the hosts struggled to break down a gritty Indios side, but a late penalty call helped Santos break through.

First Half

Daniel Ludueña had a pair of early opportunities that he squandered. First, he failed to get onto a cross by Darwin Quintero. He instead hit a soft shot from the left side of the goal.

Later, he played a give-and-go with Quintero but instead of finding an open Carlos Ochoa elected to shoot and launched his shot well over the crossbar.

Santos maintained the pressure on Indios and Walter "Lorito" Jimenez nearly capitalized. Matias Vuoso dribbled inside the area and found Jimenez open but Jimenez's shot was blocked by Indios' defense and cleared.

Indios had a few looks on goal but Oswaldo Sanchez did well to protect the goal as the mostly defensive-minded Indios yielded possession to Santos.

Second Half

Although Santos controlled the match, the well-planted Indios defense did not give up much until the 78th minute. Indios defender Jaime Herrera was ruled to have pushed Vuoso from behind as Ludueña crossed to Vuoso. Although the Santos striker hit the ground, the contact appeared minimal.

However, Juan Pablo "Chato" Rodriguez stepped to the spot and buried his attempt to give Santos a 1-0 lead.

Indios' mindless attack had little chance to get back into the game and the match sputtered to a close.
