Monterrey Open Impressively At Home
Monterrey shred an overmatched Atlas side by 3-0 on Saturday in Estadio Tecnologico.
First Half
Monterrey started the game off in control of the ball. They were hounding the Atlas defense repeatedly and taking their chances. The first real dangerous shot came courtesy of Monterrey midfielder Abraham Carreño. Carreño tried his luck from long distance but his shot caused no problem for Atlas keeper Jose Francisco Canales. William Paredes had another shot on goal only 10 minutes after in the 19th minute, his shot though caused no problems as well.
Atlas got off the mark in the 28th minute but not in the traditional sense. Atlas scored a goal but in favor of Monterrey. Edgar Pacheco accidentally pushed the ball into his own net giving the home team a 1-0 lead.
Although already ahead Los Rayados never took their foot off the gas and just ten minutes later ex Chiva, Sergio Santana gave his team a 2-0 lead. Osvaldo Martinez assisted Santana as he carried the ball down the left flank and crossed it to Santana who tapped the ball inside.
The rest of the half saw Atlas even out the ball possession but the score still remained 2-0 at the half.
Second Half
Atlas could do nothing to stop the rampaging Monterrey. They produced very little up top and all they could do is try to stop Monterrey from making the deficit any larger.
Atlas produced two shots on goal during the second half. Gonzalo Vargas was responsible for both one in the 59th minute and the other in the 64th minute. Goalkeeper Jonathan Orozco saved both chances and kept his team in the lead.
Monterrey had one significant change in the second half. Sergio Santana who scored earlier in the game left the field and was replaced by Humberto "El Chupete" Suazo. Suazo was in doubt before the game because of an ankle injury but he looked fit once he stepped on the field.
Felipe Baloy had a chance to put the game away in the 81st minutes but his header smashed against the crossbar. Suazo though had his chance and did not miss. In the 85th minute Suazo put the game beyond all doubt. Suazo scored his first of the season and the 3rd for his team. Monterrey held on to win 3-0 at home.
