Medina Back With Chivas, Excited For League Play
Alberto Medina returned to Chivas after helping lead Mexico to the Gold Cup Final. Along with Jonny Magallon, the two were part of Mexico's latest roster, to face the U.S. on Aug. 12.
The game between Chivas and Toluca ended just moments before Mexico faced off against the United States, but Medina is confident about the team going into the new tournament.
“I’ve come back happy about winning, but now I have to think about winning the game on Saturday. I didn’t see the game, I know that it was difficult. We start off with a loss against Toluca, but I see that the team is well,” said Medina at a press conference at the team’s Verde Valle training facility. “We worked well when I was here. I see them strong and I think that we’re going to win on Saturday and from then on start going up step by step to achieve our final goal which is to get to the final.”
While away with the national team, Medina was a presence on the field but often failed to mark his name on score sheets.
“I want to have more assists and more goals. I think that one of the things that I needed when I was with national team was that: to score goals. I had opportunities, and I didn’t score. There are no excuses, I just simply missed.”
Medina will try to leave those missed opportunities behind, and hopes to become an irreplaceable part of the team.
“I think that the word ‘consistency’ comes more to mind now. I think that in past tournaments I didn’t have it. I’d be a starter, then I’d be at the bench, and now it’s different. During the past tournament I started games and now in this tournament I plan to as well. It’ll require much work in each training and every game.”
After the first game resulted in a loss to Toluca, Medina hopes that the team turns around to erase the defeat from minds.
“I think that if we lose on Saturday then of course there’s pressure. It’s Chivas, it’s a big team and there is always going to be pressure. We can’t think too much about a defeat. It’s another defeat that we can turn around by winning on Saturday. From then on we can start to win, and that loss will be forgotten.”
