Pumas' Trejo Expected Tough Start To Apertura Season
Losing to Atlas on the weekend was no surprise, Pumas executive Mario Trejo said, as the road to repeating will be a great challenge.
“We are calm; I had already mentioned that it would not be an easy start, however, it was encouraging to see the way the team performed, both teams played well. It was a promising start despite the defeat,” assured the Pumas sporting director. “We get the sensation, overall personally, that Pumas deserved more but the truth is that we lost, it was a one-nil defeat very well earned by Atlas."
Trejo also assured that the Pumas players are not overconfident and now what to expect in the Apertura 2009 season.
“Whoever thinks that because we won last season’s league championship that this tourney will be easy is very wrong; every game must be met with the best possible performance,” Trejo told Mexican daily Cronica.
“Despite the defeat we are very proud with the presence of young players in the team, that also had a good showing with good personality and that shows us that we are on the right path,” boasted Trejo about the clubs objective to keep debuting new talents.
Pumas, though, earned the respect of Atlas well before the match.
“We are honored,” Trejo said about Atlas players welcoming the defending league champions by lining up along the entrance way and with a round of applause allowing Pumas to take the field first; a tradition borrowed from Spain’s La Liga. “They behaved like gentlemen and the people of Atlas acted the way they always have as a great institution,” concluded Trejo.
