America Fully Loaded, Ready For San Luis
Club America will have all of their pieces together for the first time as the club opens Apertura 2009 play against San Luis on Wednesday.
The most prepared of the two seems to be America. They measured against teams like Chelsea, Inter and AC Milan in their preseason tune up. America showed improvement over the course of the World Football Challenge. They defeated both Italian squads but were toppled by Chelsea. Still though Inter and AC Milan are no walks in the park and America showed great character in defeating them.
Although America played very well, they had to do it with a depleted squad. Las Aguilas had pupils playing on the national squad and others that could not fly to the U.S. because they did not posses the right visa. That shouldn’t be a problem for Wednesday’s game though. America should have a full squad with their reinforcements already settled in.
America will also have an ace in the hole for this game. Israel "El Jagger" Martinez was snatched away from San Luis by America. Martinez blossomed in San Luis; America took note and broke out the check book.
San Luis on the other hand took part in the SuperLiga. They did not have the same flashy opponents as their counterparts. The Gladiators faced opponent like the Chicago Fire, Tigres, and Chivas USA. San Luis had a 1-1-1 record and missed the semifinals. San Luis also missed out on the Copa Libetadores due to the much feared swine flu. It’s not all a loss for San Luis though; they will be getting players back who were sent to help out the now relegated Necaxa.
The game will be played in San Luis. There are no injuries reported for both teams and no one has any suspensions. The game will be the inaugural game in the Apertura 2009 for both. Like everything else they want to hit the ground running which America seem to have done with their outstanding preseason performance. San Luis seems to be engulfed in a showed of mystery, their Superliga performance wasn’t the best and we are still waiting to see what the reinforcements will bring on both sides of the pitch. But one can’t define a team’s performance solely on preseason tune up games. This first game won’t do that for us either but it will give a better perspective at where they stand in the Mexican tournament.
