Atlas’ Bottinelli: Atlas Trying To Stave Off Relegation

Atlas started off the season with an ugly victory but wins - whether they are ugly or not - are necessary to keep the team from falling into the relegation zone, Dario Bottinelli said.

Despite the very gritty 1-0 win over Pumas, Atlas knows this is just the beginning and they should be playing better. The season is barely starting and already Atlas has an enemy lurking around the corner. Relegation is once again haunting Los Zorros.  The win will help them stay above any danger for now but Dario Bottinelli said it was just luck and they will have to play better next time.

“Ricardo (Lavolpe) decided to make changes to protect the result and I believe we were lucky to have done so. We didn't play well but we got three points that help us a lot with what we're faced,” Bottinelli told Mural.

Although the win didn’t come easy and it looked at sometimes ugly, three points are three points which is the most important thing now.  A win against the current champions will always be uplifting, said Bottinelli.

“For the sake of our confidence it was important to win this game,” admitted Bottinelli. “In the situation we're in, we need to win whether we play good or not. We are fighting against relegation and if the people don't like the type of soccer Atlas displays but we win, we need to be happy. Nobody wants to see Atlas in the relegation zone.”

This is far from what Atlas is capable, seemed to be the message that Bottinelli tried to emit.  Bottinelli admitted that the defense and the midfield look solid but the offense has room for improvement. But with every week that goes by those gaps should start to bridge together.

“We need to improve every week, in all aspects. Defensively we're fine. In the midfield too, but I believe we need to create more space to attack in, not play so direct and to know when to take advantage of our scoring chances,” Bottinelli expressed.
