Nine-Man Toluca Beat Ten-Man Chivas In Dramatic Style
Israel Lopez scored in the fifth minute of stoppage time as Toluca beat Chivas 4-3 on Sunday.
In the end it Toluca was left with 9 men on the field, and no manager while Chivas had one less than what they started with. The game ended 4-3 with action lasting until the very last second, with Toluca taking away their first three points of the season.
First Half
Chivas were the first to attack during the game. Ramon Morales came up on the right and took a shot, but it was held off by ex-Chivas man Alfredo Talavera in the third minute.
It didn’t take long for the first goal to appear. Morales crossed a ball to Javier ‘Chicharo’ Hernandez at the center circle who then took off with great speed. Hernandez went up against Talavera and scored to make it 1-0 in the sixth minute for Chivas.
Toluca responded in the 20th minute with an equalizer. Nestor Calderon shook off ‘Pato’ Araujo’s marking, and flew in on a corner to put the ball low in the net and make the score 1-1.
Marco Fabian had a great chance in the 24th minute as Morales sent in a perfect cross in front of goal. Manuel de la Torre came in and took the ball from under Fabian and prevented another goal.
Immediately after it was Toluca who had the opportunity. In the 25th minute Isaac Brizuela shook off Edgar Solis and Hector Reynoso to take a shot, but it was saved by Luis Michel.
It was Toluca who kept on attacking during the first part of the game. In the 33rd minute Brizuela chested down a cross, but Michel was able to stop his effort. Michel lost the ball and in the second wave of the attack was able to save once more, but took a blow to the head in the process.
Toluca didn’t take too long to score their second. In the 37th minute Raul Nava scored a great header on a cross by de la Torre. Nava was able to take of Reynoso, and headed the ball into the Chivas net leaving Michel simply standing as the ball went by.
Second Half
Coming back for the second half, Marco Fabian had another wasted opportunity on the Chivas side. Julio Nava crossed to Fabian, but slipped as he tried to shoot in the 51st minute.
Toluca responded in the 73rd minute as Sinha scored Toluca’s third goal of the game. Sinha came up the right and shook of Pineda and Reynoso to send straight past Michel and make it 3-1.
Chivas responded in the 79th minute with a goal of their own. Ramon Morales took a free kick well outside the area, and Aaron Galindo was left alone to score. The defender crouched down somewhat to connect with his head to make the score 3-2.
Only a few minutes later in the 82nd minute Ramon Morales took a free kick and sent it straight from the right side of the field to make it 3-3. The Toluca defense left the Chivas players unmarked, and they took advantage to level the score.
In the 83rd minute Toluca manager ‘Chepo” de la Torre was sent off for protesting Chivas’ goal, and Toluca was left without him for the remaining minutes.
Goal scorer Sinha was sent off in the 87th minute for a strong foul on Gonzalo Pineda. The Toluca captain came in and went in near the ankle to be sent off. An few moments were wasted as Sinha protested and stayed on the field.
In the 89th minute ‘Chicharo’ Hernandez came close to scoring, but the Toluca defense was able to get out and avoid another goal.
With only seconds to go Hector Reynoso was sent off in the 93rd minute for moving too early on a free kick and Chivas was left with 10 men.
The free kick was repeated, and Toluca managed to take the win in the 95th minute with a free kick by Lopez. Israel Lopez shot right above the wall to send into the left corner giving Toluca a 4-3 win.
