Cruz Azul Humbled In Preseason Friendly

With just over one week left until the start of the regular season, Cruz Azul's loss to Toluca leaves manager Enrique Meza frustrated.

Cruz Azul's poor Clausura 2009 season may spill over into the Apertura campaign, if a recent result is a preview of Cruz Azul's season.

“I am uncomfortable with what happened, mad, and very bothered,” said Enrique Meza after Cruz Azul’s humiliating 6-2 pre-season defeat against Toluca which marked the first set back for La Maquina since “Ojitos” return to the institution.

“It was a very bad game, and no one is comfortable with a result like that, we committed mistakes that were brutal not in concept but in their execution, it was a very unpleasant result that we were thought a lesson in every sense; that the team is developing a style of play that can be different, I am not sure if it will be better or worse but these are the risks we must take,” explained Meza.

The Cruz Azul boss went on to explain that the squad that lost to Toluca was not indicative of what the team will look like once the season begins.

“This is not an outline, remember that Horacio Cervantes is suspended, and the players from the national team are missing, so I am trying to make two balanced teams so that the players can get to know each other and begin competing for a spot in the starting eleven.”

Meza seems confident that once the squad’s national team players return the team will have he equilibrium needed to have a better style of play.

“I believe that with the arrival of Horacio, of Melvin Brown, of Fausto Pinto, and Gerardo Torrado, we will have a more solid defense which is what we have been missing and I get the impression that they will give us that equilibrium that will lead to a better style of play,” said Meza.

Still, “Ojitos” feels that the squad needs one more player. “I am not looking for a striker or a defender I need a conductor, I am looking for a transmitter that will help us have more ball possession that should help us create better goal scoring options,’ concluded Meza.
