FMF To Punish Aguirre Internally

CONCACAF will punish Mexico manager Javier Aguirre, but so too will the Mexican Football Federation, according to Mexican daily Reforma.

While the Mexican Football Federation await punishment from CONCACAF, FMF executives said they plan on having their own sanctions on Javier Aguirre.

FMF Director of National Teams Nestor De La Torre told Reforma newspaper that Aguirre will be punished internally.

"I want to give what happened its just due. Of course it's not pleasant," De La Torre said. "Mr. Aguirre will have disciplinary measures against him over what happened."

Late in Thursday's game against Panama, Aguirre kicked Panama's Ricardo Phillips as the Panamanian player contested a ball along the touchline in front of Mexico's bench. Phillips pushed Aguirre back and a near-brawl ensued.

Phillips and Aguirre were each sent off.

Even if Aguirre's kick was not intended to harm Phillips, De La Torre said Aguirre has rules to follow.

"Javier is part of a group, a group in which there are codes of conduct," De La Torre said. "There are certain rules that every single one of us must follow."

Ultimately, though, what matters more is the state of the national team and not the kicking incident, De La Torre said.

"He made a mistake," he said. "We're not going to kill him because of it, nor are we going to cry about it."
