FMF Boss Calls Aguirre's Ejection "Embarrassing"

Javier Aguirre's kick to Panama's Ricardo Phillips earned the manager a red card, and also served as a black eye to the Mexican Football Federation.

A day after Mexico manager Javier Aguirre was sent off, Mexican Football Federation President Justino Campeon said the situation was a black eye on the national team.

Aguirre kicked Panama's Ricardo Phillips in the second half of the teams' Gold Cup match on Thursday in Houston. Both the manager and player were sent off, and the resulting fallout was not favorable for Mexico.

"Javier's ejection is an embarrassing situation," Compean said in a press conference on Friday.

As of Friday afternoon, no ruling had been made with regards to a possible punishment for Aguirre. Compean said he hoped the punishment would not be severe but expected some sort of backlash.

"Even though he asked for forgiveness, it's embarrassing. But I hope that after all the apologies and clarifications, and after the video review on behalf of CONCACAF and FIFA, that the punishment will be minimal," Compean said. "Obviously there will be a punishment. That's just a consequence that we must face whether we like it or not."

Furthermore, Compean said he was not pleased with Mexico's showing in the Gold Cup. Mexico struggled to put away a lowly Nicaraguan side and failed to put together much against Panama, before the ejections forced the game to sputter out.

"We're not seeing results. We lost two points and our manager as well, for one or possibly two games," Compean said.

Things are not going well for us," Compean said. "We are not scoring goals. We are hitting the post. We miss open headers. Everything seems based on desperation and frustration. We have to learn how to play against these types of teams who are strong physically, that while they don't possess the technical ability we posses count on speed and physical play."

Mexico might face an unenviable situation. If Panama beat Nicaragua by multiple goals and Mexico lose to Guadeloupe, who have won their first two games, Mexico might not even advance out of the group stage.

"What we are doing is not enough. We must defeat Guadeloupe," Compean said. "Unfortunately we never imagined being in this situation."
