Atlas Land Goalkeeper Barbosa, Complete Offseason Moves
Atlas de Guadalajara have stabilized their goalkeeping position by dealing for Mariano Barbosa from Estudiantes of Argentina.
Barbosa joins Atlas on a transfer fee of just under US$ 1 million. Barbosa started his career with Banfield and also spent time in Spain with Villarreal and Recreativo de Huelva before returning to Argentina. He played with Estudiantes and was loaned out to River Plate.
The 24-year-old goalkeeper adds stability to a position that lacked it a season ago. Starter Pedro Hernandez was hurt and manager Ricardo Lavolpe turned to youngster Jose Francisco Canales. Lavolpe, however, apparently felt the position needed an upgrade and thus turned to the young but well-traveled Barbosa.
Club officials also announced that the move would be their last and now will focus on preparing the team for the upcoming Apertura season. Atlas have friendlies scheduled against Queretaro and Newell's Old Boys as well as Santos Laguna.
