Substitutes Save The Day For Mexico
Alberto Medina set up two goals while Pablo Barrera scored a late tally as the two substitutes helped Mexico in Sunday's 2-0 win over Nicaragua.
El Tri managed to stay on Nicaragua’s side of the field all day long and a lot of chances were generated but in the end it was Mexico’s sub’s which came through.
An early injury to Carlos Vela saw Alberto Medina take the field. Medina did well in place of Vela; he was all over the field and was a key part in the set up of both goals. Medina filtered the pass to Israel Martinez who drew a penalty resulting in the first goal for Mexico. Then in the dying minutes Medina linked up with Pablo Barrera to make it 2-0.
Barrera, who came in for Israel Martinez at halftime, said that the win had been foreseen thanks to excellent work the team has put in the last week.
“The truth is that the team has been working well since last week and thanks God today we got the right result,” Barrera told Mexican publication Milenio, and said about his goal: “I had to make it; it was an opportunity to put the game away.”
El Tri made some progress against Nicaragua especially after their last friendly against Guatemala. Barrera noted that the fans expect these kinds of results or better.
“The people expect that from us,” said Barrera. “They know the capacity and the quality of each and everyone of us.”
El Tri’s next opponent is Panama who lost to Guadeloupe 2-1. Mexico could be going without striker Carlos Vela who was seen carried off the filed during the match. Vela’s status is still to be determined but Barrera knows the winning formula for Thursday’s game.
“We have to go in there with the same winning attitude so that we can claim another three points.”
