Monterrey Officials Upset Over Sudamericana Exit

Monterrey were set to play in Copa Sudamericana but after CONCACAF pulled the plug on those thoughts, club executives grew bitter.

Jorge Urdiales, President of Rayados de Monterrey, will solicit the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) for economic and sporting compensation because CONCACAF’s decision to retire their teams from the Copa Sudamericana has affected the club.

“By sporting compensation I am referring that in case that there is another international tournament be it in Central or South America, including the United States, then we will have the lead to participate,” explained Urdiales. “And for the economic; we have to have compensation because we will not be allowed to relocate all the players we have brought in which was a heavy investment."

CONCACAF pulled their teams earlier this week from Copa Sudamericana, citing an increased level of activity with the region.

“At first instance it was a very demoralizing decision because we desired to have international football in our city, for our fans, and then we react and think about the squad we built (to play in the South American tournament), the investments that were made, and wonder why we were not told earlier,” lamented Urdiales.

Instead of preparing for the draw, scheduled for July 3, Monterrey must focus only on the upcoming Apertura 2009 season.

“The news came like a bucket of cold water and a feeling of bother and lament because we had prepared and dedicated a team that can be competitive in two tournaments; in fact we have a squad of 30 players that, with the exception of two, have all initiated pre-season and then we are told that we will not be competing in the South American Cup. Had they told us a month earlier then we would have gladly considered the situation, but they have taken us by surprise and leave us in a bad spot," Urdiales said. "We are conscious that we are in CONCACAF, we are institutional, which is more than just losing an opportunity to participate in an important tournament.”

The Monterrey president said he believed that CONCACAF’s decision to terminate its clubs participation in the South American tourney was influenced by television networks.

“It is an important part, I believe so, I consider that there is a strong effect from the Television stations; obviously there is FOX and ESPN and I believe they are involved in the decision,” concluded Urdiales.
