Mexico followed up their triumphant, confidence-building rout of
Venezuela with a flat, dull and listless effort against Guatemala. Fans
in San Diego's Qualcomm Stadium rained the team with boos during the
match and after the scoreless draw.
Perhaps sensing a negative response from the media, Mexico coach Javier Aguirre was rather defiant to the gathered crowd of reporters at the post-match press conference.
"I see more worry from all of you (the media) because I haven't had a chance to take a poll of 50,000 people to see if their worried or not," Aguirre said.
The game, played before a crowd of 30,624, may fuel the fears surrounding the national team's chances in World Cup qualifying, as well as their potential Gold Cup struggles. Aguirre said several times that he was not worried but did not expect a similar sense of confidence from the press.
"You can analyze all of the bad, the good, the average that we played. There's plenty of time to be pessimists and worriers," he said. "I am certain that in this Gold Cup we will see a good Mexican team. I hope we reach the final and we win it. Afterward there will be time to worry and be scared."
As for the boos, Aguirre said the fans were justified in doing so because of the lack of scoring.
"We owed them a goal," he said. "We presented an ordered team. They should praise the Guatemalan goalkeeper."
