Vela Maintains Focus Entering Next Friendly

Mexico's Carlos Vela said the team has a long way to go despite a 4-0 win over Venezuela on Wednesday.

The Mexican national team stepped up and won against Venezuela on Wednesday night, but Carlos Vela thinks that the team still has a way to go. The young Arsenal forward scored a goal in the 4-0 win, and hopes that the win will give more confidence to the team, as well as fellow U-17 World Championship winner Giovani Dos Santos, after being heavily criticized after poor performances.

“We (Vela and Dos Santos) seemed like the bad guys of the movie. I hope that with this everyone will realize that we’re not that bad, and now we’re not the best. We’re players that have to do our work, and contribute to that national team. We’re young now and we still have much to learn,” Vela told reporters.

The blame of El Tri’s problems has been thrown on several groups, and Vela isn’t sure of who carries the largest share.

“I don’t know. Maybe the midfield, ourselves, I don’t know. It’s been something very rigorous, something very drastic. I hope that now things will go on normally.”

Vela is one of two European-based players on Mexico’s roster for the upcoming friendly, against Guatemala, and the Gold Cup. Despite missing out on the Gunners’ preseason training, Vela remains confident about his future with the North London club.

“I’ll play with Arsenal next season," Vela said. "The boss (Wenger) has confidence in me and he told me that he’s counting on me. My intention is to earn minutes and to be on the pitch as much as possible.”
