Guadalajara's Hernandez Stays Humble Despite Success

Javier "Chicharo" Hernandez has had his path to success cleared for him but he has not let a strong Clausura 09 campaign affect him.

Last season Javier “Chicharo” Hernandez, one of Chivas de Guadalajara most promising players, was supposed to have broken into the starting eleven but with Carlos Ochoa and Jared Borgetti reinforcing the team the youngster had to wait his turn. As the season progressed Borgetti failed to score a goal and Ochoa, aside from a promising start, soon fizzled out.

Hernandez, however, slowly proved his worth scoring in league play as well as Copa Libertadores.

Chicharo’s progression was good enough to convince Chivas owner Jorge Vergara that the club had made a mistake in bringing Ochoa and Borgetti. With the veteran strikers now out of the club, and no new acquisitions at attack, the Chivas coaching staff has placed their faith in the feisty striker for the Apertura 2009 season.

“I have my goals, personal objectives, and one of them is to consolidate myself in the first team, and I expect that to happen soon,” Hernandez told Mural newspaper.

A season ago, Chicharo scored four goals in 15 games and quickly became a fan favorite. Despite the club releasing two strikers Chicharo is still cautious of the competition provided by the team’s revolving door of upstarts.

“This will always be the story here with the youngsters from the youth squads always looking to succeed and that is normal in Chivas,” explained Hernandez. “Now that I am in the first team, with the opportunities that Paco (Ramirez) has given me, and the regular playing time I am looking for, the youth players will also be waiting for their opportunity and looking to take advantage of it just as I have."
