The Mexican national team gathered in Mexico City on Sunday in preparation for a pair of friendlies and the CONCACAF Gold Cup, which for El Tri kicks off July 5 in Oakland, Calif.

Mexico's players met at the team's headquarters in the Mexican capital and will travel to the United States for the first of two friendlies. Mexico will play Venezuela in Atlante on Wednesday before facing Guatemala in San Diego on Sunday.

Although the friendly matches might not have long-lasting ramifications, the players said the games will be important nevertheless.

"We are approaching these games with importance they deserve," Juan Carlos Valenzuela told reporters upon joining the squad. "We're convinced that we need to win these games and show that we are serious about them. We are also headed there with intentions of winning the Gold Cup and I believe we will do it."
