Mexican League "Draft" Yields Dozens Of Moves

Not an amateur draft as is the case in American sports, the Mexican league held their annual draft Wednesday and 65 players moved clubs.

The Mexican league held its annual draft on Wednesday and 65 players ended up changing teams.

The draft is not like the typical draft common in American sports. Instead of young talent changing hands, the Mexican league draft feauters existing players changing from team to team.

There were no major moves made during the draft. In fact, some of the more prevalent moves that qualified as draft deals were made before the draft started, such as Jesus Corona's move from Tecos to Cruz Azul, Edgar Castillo's move from America to Tigres and Monterrey's acquisition of Duilio Davino from Puebla.

Queretaro officially stocked their team as the newly-promoted club now has some faces to it. Perhaps the most important player to join the club is defender Joaquin Beltran, who gives the team a legitimate defender to build around.

Jaguares were active as well. Aside from former Chivas USA's Francisco Mendoza - who joined the club on loan from Guadalajara - Jaguares picked up goalkeeper Oscar Perez from Cruz Azul and midfielder Alejandro Arguello from America. Jaguares also moved forward Itamar Batista on on outright transfer to Tigres.

Puebla were also active. The club lost three key players in Daniel Osorno, Duilio Davino and Ramon Nuñez but filled holes with players such as Jared Borgetti from Guadalajara (another pre-draft deal), forward Jorge Achucarro from Atlas and goalkeeper Alexandro Alvarez from recently-relegated Necaxa.

Guadalajara, who did not pick up any players, also saw Carlos Ochoa move to Santos. Ochoa, though, had been on loan from Monterrey. The club also loaned goalkeeper Alfredo Talavera to Toluca.


Atlas picked up defender Mario Mendez from Toluca and midfielder Gerardo Espinoza from Santos and moved Bruno Marioni to Tecos on a loan deal.
