Mexico Players Lament Failed Scoring Opportunities

A 2-1 Mexico win could have been a 4-1 or 5-1 rout, players said. Instead, they were left wondering what may have been.

After the 2-1 win over Trinidad and Tobago, it may seem like Mexico had a harder time during the game. Although the score was close, the margin could have been greater as Mexico missed several scoring chances.

The team opened the scoring early in the first minute of the game, but several chances after that left goal scorer Guillermo Franco frustrated with the missed opportunities.

"We're aware that as forwards we failed," Franco said. "But I don't think it's because we underestimated our rival. I don't think it's because we thought to much of ourselves or thought this would be an easy game."

After such an early goal, Aguirre's mandate of ganar, gustar y golear - win, enjoy and rout - seemed like it would come to pass. Instead, El Tri missed numerous scoring chances. Franco took some of the blame.

"I'm upset because of the scoring chances we missed," Franco said. "Since Javier Aguirre called me up I've come with the responsibility to score, which I am taking on and need only to continue working."

Only Oscar "Kevin" Rojas was able to find the back of the net, as he scored the game-winner in the 46th minute.

Alberto “Venado” Medina also came close to scoring near the end of the game. Although he missed, he hopes to continue his stint with the national team.

“I came in with a lot of hopes to do things well. I carried out what Javier asked me to. Personally, I felt very well and I hope to be taken into account next time,” said Medina.

Along with his miss, Medina is aware the team had several wasted opportunities.

“We started out well, with a lot of force since our first play led to a goal. Later came the only error that gave away the draw and Kevin’s good goal to give the overall 2-1. Mexico had the ball, looked dynamic, and with mobility and many chances. We only needed to score more goals.”

Although many predicted for Mexico to score more against Trinidad and Tobago, Israel Castro says the victory needs to be enjoyed.

“We need to enjoy this win," the midfielder said. "We worked well and because of that we won. If the team had been easier we wanted more goals, but we couldn’t and more goals were denied. However, we came out with an important win and we’re happy because of that.”
