CONMEBOL Officials Schedule Meeting With Mexican Federation
The two sides will meet on June 1 in an attempt to reconcile the differences that led to the FMF's decision to pull out altogether from South American competitions.
“There has always existed a predisposition to solve differences that under no circumstances can be attributed to CONMEBOL. The situation (that led to Mexico’s rupture with CONMEBOL) has been unfortunate for all of us,” CONMEBOL’s media representative Nestort Benitez told reporters.
The Mexican Football Federation (FMF) announced the withdrawal of it’s clubs from CONMEBOL after the negativity of South American clubs Nacional and Sao Paolo to play against San Luis and Chivas de Guadalajara in the Copa Libertadores finals for fear of the AH1N1 outbreak in Mexico.
The CONMEBOL meeting with FMF, which will coincide with FIFA’s executives meeting set for the June 2-4 in Nassau, will look to resolve their issues before deciding on the South American Cup group drawing and Copa America adjustments, both tournaments in which Mexico also participates in.
“The meeting has been scheduled,” assured Benitez of the imminent meeting between CONMEBOL president Nicolas Leoz and FMF representatives. CONMEBOL had already set a meeting between it’s national associations which will focus on fourteen subjects looking to improve their confederation with Mexico’s participation in future South American competitions being one of their focal points.
