Pachuca Not Suffering From Overconfidence

Pachuca players said their 3-1 aggregate lead over Jaguares means nothing entering Sunday's second leg in Estadio Hidalgo.

Pachuca will host Jaguares at Estadio Hidalgo with a 3-1 score line for the second leg of the Liguilla. While the Tuzos have a comfortable lead, and a combination of results would see them through, no one at Pachuca sees themselves in the next round yet. Others warn against excessive confidence, while manager Enrique Meza wants constant vigilance.

With a comfortable lead in hand, Pachuca are still approaching the game against Jaguares cautiously. Christian Gimenez knows that the situation might reverse itself for the second leg.

“It was very important to win the first leg. However, we know that in the same manner that we scored three goals over there, they can do that here. Whoever thinks this series is over is wrong. (Jaguares) is a difficult rival, and they’re going to leave everything in order to turn around the result,” said Gimenez.

Damian Alvarez thinks that Pachuca left their guard down in Chiapas, and that caused them to give away a goal.

“We started off on the right foot, with the wish to be candidates for the title. It would be absurd for the result to be bad. Pachuca has clear objectives, and as the main weapon, the football it played during the tournament,“ said Alvarez. “At times there was excessive confidence, we had the ball and we played our game. That was our mistake, and it cost us a goal.”

With the two-goal advantage, Meza said he doesn’t want the players to go into the game thinking that it’s won.

“No way is this decided. Jaguares has great individual players and with Luis Fernando’s arrival surely they’ll give a fight," Meza said. “The team played well, Jaguares wasn’t easy. They’re dangerous and we held them well. We were lucky to score three times, and that made the difference.”
