Puebla did what they had to Saturday and passed on to the semifinals. Puebla tied Monterrey 2-2 and won their series with a 5-3 aggregate.

Puebla, who were battling relegation in the early part of the season, reached the semifinals in seemingly improbable manner. Different problems, especially financial ones, plagued Puebla all season long. Even when money was owed to them the players shrugged it aside and played football with heart for 90 minutes. It was Puebla’s heart that won them the series.

Puebla came into the game knowing that the slight advantage they had was not going to be enough to beat Monterrey at home. So Puebla pushed forward and in the 12th minute almost got their first of the night courtesy of Ramon Núñez.

The warning shot by Núñez seemed to go unnoticed as one minute later Puebla would score on them. Daniel Osorno, who has been on the rise this season, made Puebla’s first goal of the night, putting them up 1-0. Puebla still threw players up top despite the lead. The half ended with Puebla having the momentum.

The second half started with Monterrey pounding the ball downfield. They had three straight unanswered shots but none could go in.

Puebla answered back and with another goal as Núñez gave Puebla a 2-0 lead and a 5-1 aggregate edge as Monterrey’s dreams were slipping fast. Two minutes after Puebla scored, Monterrey answered back with a goal from William Paredes, putting the game at 2-1 and the aggregate score at 5-2 aggregate.

The momentum shifted entirely to Monterrey and they kept on attacking and their chances almost dropped in. In the 77th minute they were successful. Abraham Carreño tied the game at two apiece but Puebla was still winning over all. Puebla turned it up and got back into the game. Monterrey was unable to score further ending the game at a 2-2 tie and the series at 5-3.

If top-seed Pachuca and second-seeded Toluca each win, Puebla will play Pachuca in the semifinal round.
