To start the Liguilla Thursday, number one seed Pachuca came up against a team that wasn’t even in the usual eight. Pachuca had dominated the Mexican League standings for the majority of the Clausura 2009 campaign, while Jaguares had qualified into the Liguilla by earning the second place in their group, but 12th place overall in the league table.

In the first leg, Pachuca continued  their dominance by beating Jaguares 3-1, making a series comeback difficult.

Pachuca quickly got into the rhythm of the game, wasting no time to make their presence felt. Right away in the third minute they got on the scoreboard with a header by Paul Aguilar.

Jaguares tried to surprise Pachuca with long range efforts, but they weren’t paying off. A close call came in the 13th minute when Pachuca 'keeper Miguel Calero saved an effort by Neri Cardozo who had produced Jaguares’ most dangerous shot of the game.

It didn’t take much longer for Pachuca to dominate once more, and in the 21st minute Jose Francisco Torres shot from far out left to double the score.

Then it was Jaguares who scored in the 38th minute to cut the lead in half. Cardozo tried a long range effort to give Jaguares their goal.

Coming back for the second half it was Ulises Mendevil in the 50th minute who tried to extend Pachuca’s lead, but his header was saved by Jaguares 'keeper Edgar Hernandez.

It was then Jaguares who provided some danger when Adolfo ‘Bofo’ Bautista was given lots of space outside the box. He curled a shot in, and forced Calero into a tough save.
Pachuca kept on having the best chances of the evening, and in the 80th minute Paul Aguilar shot the ball just wide, after several players had made a mess inside the box.

Los Tuzos were determined to increase the score, and in the 87th they made it 3-1. Gilberto Mora tried to clear the ball after a rebound on which Blas Perez had been ready to strike, but Mora came in and touched the ball to put it into his own net, and widened the score.

Now, Pachuca will go into the next game more relaxed as they only need a draw, or even a loss by two goals to qualify for the semifinal. If in the end the teams are on level terms, Pachuca would go through due to their higher position in the standings.
