Mexico's Aguirre Shows Ability To Adapt
Mexico closed out their training camp on Wednesday after a week of obstacles made things difficult for manager Javier Aguirre.
First it was the swine flu which almost canceled El Tri's plans to come together. Second, an earthquake that shook the Mexican capital. And the last one was the loss of the Mexican defender Rafael Marquez.
"In this type of football one has to learn that everyday something happens. We always have to have the capacity to improvise, the 'Plan Bs', when nothing goes right, like right now for example," mentioned Aguirre.
Aguirre understands with the events changing so rapidly, he needs to be on his toes.
"You need to adapt fast as a coach to keep working and take out the most from the Mexican team," he said.
Marquez, a player who Aguirre has counted on before will be out of the Mexican line ups for the matches to come. The Barcelona defender received an injury during his side's Champions League game against Chelsea on Tuesday. To Aguirre, his loss is a huge disappointment to the team and the fans.
"We evidently have to wait and see what the out come of the surgery is, then you have the rehab time. It was a setback to his football career and to all the Mexicans," noted Aguirre. "I spoke with Rafa, he was optimistic and still did not know the extent of his injury. He was in high spirits."
Aguirre also spoke about the players that attended the camp. The "Plan B" he mentioned could well be in one of the 22 men that were called up. His next camp which will be held May 27th in preparation for the games against El Salvador and Trinidad and Tobago.
"I see the Mexican player, the ones I had today were very focused. They understand their profession, they know they can elaborate on their future or with football, and that's how they carry themselves," explained Aguirre. "I saw a team that was committed. I saw them during meals and they looked focus, during trainings, I saw them focused on the work."
The Mexican coach went on to mention that he will not base his selections on the work which was done. The teams they play for won't matter. The age is not a determining factor, to Aguirre the only thing that matters is the players' curriculum.
