Rafael Marquez will not be able to participate in upcoming World Cup qualifiers against El Salvador or Trinidad & Tobago.
The Barcelona and Mexico defender injured himself in Tuesday's Champions League match against Chelsea. The injury happened during a seemingly routine action as Marquez dribbled the ball near the middle of the field when his knee buckled. He immediately fell to the ground and was taken out of the match.
Tests revealed damage to his meniscus and subsequent surgery was necessary.
Marquez has played in just one World Cup qualifying match this year as he picked up a red card in a 2-0 loss to the United States on Feb. 11. He was subsequently suspended for two games.
Mexico will also be down defender Ricardo Osorio for those games as the Stuttgart man had gall bladder surgery earlier this month.
