Stoppage-Time Goal Sends San Luis Through
San Luis scored a goal in second-half stoppage time and beat Libertad of Paraguay 2-0, a result that sent the Mexican club through to the knockout stages of Copa Libertadores.
San Luis surprised Paraguayan side Libertad 2-0 while Universitario lost at San Lorenzo by the same score.
Jairo Patino and Jose Reyes scored goals in the 58th and 90th minutes, respectively, the latter of which sent San Luis through to the knockout rounds.
San Luis' victory gave the Mexican club an even goal differential while Universitario's was at minus-one as los Gladiadores went through on the tiebreaker.
With the match scoreless in the opening stages of the second half, San Luis were awarded a free kick just outside of the penalty area. Patiño stepped up to take it and buried his set-piece attempt into the back of the net.
Libertad though did not quit and tried to get back into the game. The hosts did well to keep San Luis from threatening the goal until San Luis broke through and scored one of the most important goals in club history.
From the left side of the penalty area, Braulio Luna whipped a cross to the front of the goal. Reyes was in position and pushed a header along into the back of the goal.
Once the final whistle sounded, players celebrated together in the middle of the field. What seemed so unlikely just earlier on Friday but the club was able to mount a comeback and showed character in reaching the knockout rounds of Copa Libertadores.
