Nervous Varela Survives Clasico, Reaps Rewards
Chivas Sporting Director Mariano Varela said nerves got the best of him before Sunday's Superclasico but can now relax and enjoy the victory.
In the end America failed to cancel out Sergio Amaury Ponce’s goal that gave Chivas the 1-0 win at home in El Clasico.
“At the end, winning against your archrival is always a reason for joy. It’s a lot of things, it’s a game for qualification, the motivational aspect of winning against America is always great too. You suffer more outside, and you suffer on the pitch as a player as well,” said Varela.
Before the game Varela had prepared himself for two scenarios; a win or a loss. Now, he’s preparing for the future.
“I’m enjoying (the win) in a great way," Varela said. "We have to turn the page tomorrow and think of what’s coming ahead.”
Varela believed Chivas had the superiority in the game, but admitted that the team fell a little in the second half. Winning the Mexican classic was important and in the end well deserved.
“We were better. Perhaps in the second half the intensity went down, but later we recovered and came away with the victory. It was about winning or winning, playing beautifully, or normally. I think we played well and deserved the win.”
