Vergara Justifies Sacking, Rips Into Players After Training
Chivas owner Jorge Vergara defended the move to swich managers days before the Clasico Nacional, then tears into players after their first training session under Francisco "Paco" Ramirez.
As he introduced Francisco "Paco" Ramirez to the local media, Vergara insisted that Arellano was merely an interim manager all along, and that the club's board of directors all wanted to move away from Arellano.
"Much like when we announced three weeks ago that Omar Arellano would be an interim manager, that was the agreement we had, that while the board made the decision to stay with him or to bring in someone else," Vergara said. "During the Holy Week, on various occasions, we evaluated and ultimately decided that Francisco Ramirez would take over the coaching staff and that Omar Arellano would continue with the staff."
Utlimately, though, Arellano did not want any part of Guadalajara, Vergara said.
"Until (Wednesday) night, Omar Arellano had accepted to respect our agreement but this morning he decided he could no longer continue with Chivas and we respect his decision. But the bottom line is, everyone is on the same page. It was a unanimous decision from all the members to make this change with the team."
However, Ramirez was asked by reporters when he was contacted and told them that it was all very much a last-minute deal.
Meanwhile, Vergara took time after Wednesday's training session to rip into the players. About an hour after the club completed its first practice in the "Paco" Ramirez era, Vergara took most of the squad aside and laid into the team. According to a report in Guadalajara daily Mural, Vergara was heard yelling at the team and phrases such as "this is the last time" were audible throughout the practice facility.
According to Mural, Chivas players Ramon Moralez, Luis Michel, Carlos Ochoa, Alberto Medina and Gonzalo Pineda were not present during the talk but were instead involved in a discussion with front-office personnel.
