Sven-Goran Eriksson is no longer manager of Mexico, but the Mexican Football Federaton has not tipped its hand in terms of who might replace the deposed manager.

FMF Director of National Teams Nestor De La Torre said he would reveal the new manager when the hiring process had culminated.

"We'll let everyone know the next step at the right time," De La Torre said. "I ask that you wait a moment. What happens next will become public."

Rumors have been circulating that Javier Aguirre and the FMF had a handshake agreement for Aguirre to take over El Tri should the worst come to fruition. Now that the worst has happened - Mexico suffered a humiliating 3-1 defeat in Honduras and their World Cup campaign is seemingly in danger - Eriksson is gone, and many within the Mexican media are pegging Aguirre as Eriksson's replacement.

De La Torre did not reveal if Aguirre would come in for Eriksson or if the FMF would go in a different direction.

"We will announce it soon," De La Torre said. "We have in mind someone who will understand the idiosyncrasies, the responsibility, the right personality but we'll re-visit this them in the next hours or days."

As far as Eriksson goes, the national team went 6-6-1 in Eriksson's 13 games in charge. Eriksson guided Mexico to the Hexagonal round of World Cup qualifying but failed to win any of the five road games in which he managed. Road results ultimately led to the sacking.

"I'd like to thank Mr. Eriksson for the work he put in with the Mexican national team," De La Torre. "It is obvious that the results dictate our steps in this process and unfortunately we were not obtaining the desired results."

Still, Eriksson's time in Mexico was not in vain.

"He leaves with us the knowledge of another culture, another way of doing things, another way of managing a team," De La Torre said. "I believe there are many thing we could utilize in the future."
