Handball, Counterattacks Sink Mexico's Hopes

Andres Guardado blamed a handball and counterattacks for Mexico's 3-1 setback in Honduras.

After Mexico’s 3-1 defeat to Honduras the players seemed down, but some like Andres Guardado have acknowledged some of what went wrong.

The obvious play for the Mexican midfielder that greatly impacted the game was Honduras’ first goal where Carlos Costly handled the ball.

“In the first play (of Honduras’ first goal) there was something there," Guardado said.

Early in the first half, Costly pushed a ball along forward with his hand before knocking Leobardo Lopez off the ball and slipped a shot between Guillermo Ochoa's legs.

Afterwards, Mexico tried to push forward in search of a goal but the team was caught by Honduran counterattacks while they tried to level the game.

"We wanted to win away from home," Guardado said. "We wanted to draw in the beginning, with people up front, and they surprised us with a counterattack.”
