Costly Damaging To Mexico Again

For the second time in three years, Carlos Costly scored two goals in a Honduran win over Mexico.

Before Wednesday's match against Mexico, Honduran players said what happened in the game depended on them and not on what El Tri would bring to Estadio Olimpico.

Carlos Costly took that attitude to heart. Costly scored two goals as Honduras routed El Tri 3-1 in a World Cup qualifier in San Pedro Sula.

While Mexico looked lost and punchless, Honduras looked hungry for a victory.

"I liked the character of this team," Costly told television reporters after the match. "Everyone gave everything they had and we did what our manager asked of us."

In particular, Costly was encouraged by his manager Reinaldo Rueda. Like any temperamental but talented striker, Costly could have gotten discouraged without an early goal but Rueda talked some sense into him.

"He told me not to get desperate, that the goal would come," Costly said. "And there were two not one."

Costly opened the scoring in the 17th minute when he battled with Mexico defender Leobardo Lopez down the left flank for a ball. Costly muscled past Lopez, carried the ball inside the penalty area and ripped a left-footed shot between Guillermo Ochoa's legs. After Carlos Pavon gave Mexico a 2-0 edge before halftime, Costly put the game away in the 79th minute. Pavon won a header outside the penalty area and left the ball for Danilo Turcios, who slipped a pass to Costly. The lanky striker buried his attempt from near the edge of the penalty area to give Honduras a 3-0 advantage.

"It was pure courage," Costly said of his first goal. "I fought for the ball there and before all these people I was able to score."

Costly's success against Mexico has not been limited to Wednesday. Costly scored twice in a 2-1 win Honduras enjoyed over Mexico in the 2007 Gold Cup.

"With the national team you have to give it your all because this team is for everyone," Costly said. "To be honest, every time I join the national team I am excited and I always give it my all."
