Mexicans Abroad: Guardado Reappears
This week, Giovani dos Santos received another opportunity in England, Andrés Guardado returned to action in La Liga, and Héctor Moreno suffered an injury setback.
A mixed-bag of news from abroad for the Mexican faithful.
In Spain, Andrés Guardado fully recovered from a thigh injury that sidelined him for two months and featured in the Deportivo starting line-up against Sporting de Gijon this past Sunday. The talented midfielder had a discreet participation of 55 minutes and despite a goal effort in the first half was unable to help Depor avoid the defeat.
Also, Hugo Sánchez and Almería got a reality check when they suffered their first home defeat at the hands of league-leading Barcelona. Hugo’s Andalusian side put on a commendable performance for over 50 minutes, but in the end Rafael Márquez and Barça proved why they lead La Liga and are one of the top sides in Europe.
In England, Giovani dos Santos was sent to League Championship side Ipswich Town on-loan for the rest of the season. It is clear that the 19-year-old struggled in his first months in the top-flight of English football with Tottenham, and the move will allow him to gain some much-needed playing time, experience, and dispel some of the pressure the young striker has had to endure in the current campaign.
While there are more positive arguments in favor of this move, the question remains if Giovani will continue to be a regular with the Mexican national team in upcoming qualification matches?
In the Netherlands, Héctor Moreno will have to prolong his inactivity due to an unfortunate injury setback. It was expected this week that the AZ Alkmaar defender would join his side in full-team training, but he suffered a swollen ankle and tendon during rehabilitation which deterred his much desired return. AZ doctors have not given him a return date, but the 21-year-old is determined to wait, avoid any risks and fully recover to play in the match when AZ is crowned Eredivisie champion.
