Mexicans Abroad: Paving The Way

The list of Legionarios continues to grow as doors continue to open for Mexican footballers abroad. One of them paving the way is Rodolfo Espinoza, who has quickly consolidated himself on Universitario of Peru.

In recent weeks, the main Mexicans abroad have been criticized for a lack of conviction on the national team and the difficulty they experience in acclimatizing to a foreign league.

However, Arsenal's Carlos Vela, Ricardo Osorio of Stuttgart, and PSV's Carlos Salcido all had good weeks, demonstrating a great club form and contributing with important assists for their clubs aspirations.

Also, a relative newcomer to the Legionarios continued to make a name for himself abroad.  In less than a month, midfielder Rodolfo Espinoza quickly won a spot in the starting formation of Universitario of Peru and the hearts of their faithful.  “El Fito” had important participation in the Copa Libertadores and scored a double in the weekend Peruvian first division fixture.

It was estimated that a total of 53 Mexican footballers played their football abroad in 2008.  While the actual number for the current year is not exact, there are a few more names to add to the list of Legionarios treading the pitches of the lower divisions and youth sectors around the world.

From goalkeeper Carlos Morán of CD Cuenca of Ecuador; Spain’s third division trio: forward Martín Pérez of CD Ourense (scored a double this weekend), midfielder Gerardo Llano of Atlético Deva, and goalkeeper Adrián Abascal of Villajoyosa CF (on loan from Barça Athletic);  Christián Buglione of Deportivo Riestra in Argentina’s Primera “D”; coach Rafael Loredo of Club Universidad SC in Guatemala’s second division.

Finally, three teenagers in the youth sectors of European clubs. In Italy, 18-year-old defender Carlo Crociani Barcenas of AC Siena’s Primavera team.  Also, 15-year-old Chivas products, goalkeeper Richard Sánchez and midfielder Carlos Plascencia of Atlético Madrid’s Cadete division.

Best of luck to all of them.
