Morelia Hope For Boy-ish Charm
Morelia welcome back former coach Tomas Boy as he is handed the reins of the struggling club ahead of a Jornada 7 match with Chivas.
Boy took over the reins with Morelia a day after the Michoacan club sacked Luis Fernando Tena. The move marks the third time Boy has been in charge of Monarcas.
"I am thankful for this great opportunity," Boy said in his introductory press conference. "It is in an honor to be in charge again of a club like Monarcas Morelia. I'm excited and I believe we have a strong roster."
Morelia are 2-3-1 and tied for third place in Group 2. One point ahead of Morelia are Chivas, Saturday's opponent, while Tecos sits two points in front of Boy's new side.
Morelia struggled in its last two games but the team did well in the first four games, allowing just two goals while winning two consecutive matches. Boy said he will focus on the positive and will enter his position with ambition.
"I believe a great deal in this team's potential and in each and every one of these players. Had I not, I would not have taken this challenge," Boy said. "The front office has done a great job in building a team that is worthy of representing this city and I do not think this team cannot become one of the top three teams in Mexican soccer."
Boy previously coached Morelia to success. From the Invierno 98 to Verano 2000, Boy led Morelia to three playoff appearances and one repechaje. Prior to that, Boy led Morelia to the semifinals of the Verano 97 season after having taken over early in the Invierno 96 campaign. Boy has a 42-41-29 record with Morelia, and a 94-119-70 record with nine teams (including two stints apiece with Morelia and Veracruz) over 15 seasons. He last coach Atlas in the Apertura 2007 season.
With his new team, Boy said he has an advantage in that Morelia have had a taste of success - Morelia had a 7-5-5 record a year ago but did not reach the playoffs.
"I like the fighting spirit in this team but sometimes things don't go as planned," Boy said. "This unit has already played well - last season - and they know what it's like to compete. For one reason or another it did not advance from there."
