thumbnail Hello,

Juan Carlos Chavez named coach of Mexico's Under-20 national team after Jesus "Chucho" Ramirez left for Club America.

Jesus Ramirez was called to help a struggling America, and with that he had to give up managing the Mexican youth sides. Promptly, the Mexican Federation decided to name Juan Carlos Chavez manager of the Mexican U-20 side. Chavez “La Pajara” last managed Veracruz for 11 games in the Apertura 2006 but failed to make much of an impact.

Mauricio Peña, José Luis Arce, and José Luis Real were other candidates in mind for the Mexican youth side.

The job consists of qualifying for the U-20 World Cup in Egypt. The team will play in Trinidad and Tobago for a chance to win one of the four spots.

“The competition is coming up soon, and I’m excited because we’re looking for a spot in the World Cup. The time will come when we meet with Luis Gonzalez, and both sit down to talk to Chucho Ramirez to talk about the experiences with this group,” Chavez said, referring to the 2005 U-17 world title. “I’ve already met with the group to work with them and see their potential.”

“I’m thankful to come back. It’s a challenge, and as a challenge it has risks and we accept that. We’re aware of starting early, and we’re going to force ourselves to work,” said José Luis González China who was made the assistant for the U-20 side. He was also the assistant manager when Mexico won the famed champions ship at the U-17 World Cup in Peru. “I hope to be in contact with Jesus Ramirez and Victor Ramirez soon.”

Chavez had previously managed Dorados and led them to the national stage. He hopes to have Mario “Califas” Arteaga or Guillermo “La Morena” Hernández as part of his technical team.

The U-20 team will travel to Jamaica  where they will play against their U-20 counterparts. After, they’ll travel to Phoenix, Arizona to play against a local team on February 18th before heading to Trinidad and Tobago on March 3rd to begin their participation in the qualifying tournament.

In the coming weeks the managers of the U-17 and U-15 teams will be announced.
