Osorio Wants More "Si Se Puede"

Mexican defender Ricardo Osorio laments constant criticism from Mexican media ahead of Mexico's Hexagonal opener against the United States.

"Si se puede! Si se puede!" was a phrase popularized by the Mexican media ahead of the 1998 World Cup. Though it originated around club side Toluca, the phrase became a rallying cry for El Tricolor and was used in newspaper headlines, radio talk shows and beamed on television sets throughout Mexico.

It's a phrase, however, that is not propogated as much from the Mexican media. And at least one Mexican international would like to hear the phrase more often.

"The media only focuses on the aspect that we cannot win against the United States," defender Ricardo Osorio said as he asked for more support from Mexican media.

Osorio insisted that pressure is constant and the media needs to give the national team more credit.

"Who are they in favor of, us or them?" Osorio asked.

Conversely, Osorio lamented that the U.S. media will barely notice the match and that it will be played at all.

"They don't even care," Osorio said about the American media.

The Mexican media can be quite harsh and have played an influential role in coaching moves throughout the years. There is at least one media outlet supporting El Tri, though, even if it means putting a curse on U.S. players. Mexican daily Record has promoted the use of voodoo dolls to help readers support their team - the dolls have U.S. jerseys and have needles sticking through them.

No matter if it's with voodoo or positive stories, Osorio said he wants the backing of his home nation's media.

"We want them to be with us, but when we lose only the squad loses. When we win, we all win and that doesn't seem fair to me," Osorio said. "At the end of the day, I live with the results of the squad and not anything else beyond that."

Osorio also emphasized that, much like there are good and bad players, there is equal disparity between media outlets.

"You have the good ones and you have the bad ones," Osorio said, "but they are all going to be accepted by the soccer player."
