Pavel Pardo Injury Blow To Mexico Hopes

Pavel Pardo, Mexico's stalwart defensive midfielder, was injured in a Mexican league game where his team, Club America, lost to Morelia.

Longtime Mexican international Pavel Pardo injured his left leg in Club America's 1-0 loss to Morelia on Saturday night.

Pardo limped off in the 59th minute of the match.

The extent of the injury is not known, but unless it is of a minor nature, it could cost the Mexican national team one of their most experienced players for the opening game of the hexagonal round of World Cup qualifying.

The highly anticipated February 11 match pits the CONCACAF region's bitterest rivals against each other. The United States of America versus its southern neighbor, Mexico, is the marque game of the qualifying slate.

A troubled Mexico team have already been hard hit by injury and suspension issues leading up to the match. Andres Guardado, their most dynamic player, has a ruptured tendon in his left leg and will be unavailable for the match.

Three players, Carlos Vela, Gerardo Torrado and Fernando Arce cannot appear because all are serving suspensions for cards.

Even captain Rafael Marquez is questionable for the game, as he is still recovering from a muscle strain. The Barcelona player is listed in the lineup for his club's match this Sunday, however. This indicates that the defender may have recuperated.

That is encouraging news for Sven-Goran Eriksson's side, though Pardo's possible loss will still be a concern.
