VIDEO: Chivas Celebrates Interliga Win

Club Deportivo Guadalajara got the new year off to the right start by capturing the Interliga title and securing passage to the Copa Libertadores tournament.

On Sunday night, Chivas Guadalajara of Mexico captured the 2009 Interliga title with a penalty kick shootout victory over Morelia.

Chivas claimed the title over Pachuca, who also won on the final day of competition, by virtue of a higher overall point total. Pachuca lost one game in the tournament, but Chivas claimed a draw or better in each match.

Looking back on the competition, coach Efrain Flores declared that his team came prepared to take the tournament seriously from the start. Flores stated that he believes that Interliga is improving every year.

The fervent supporters of Chivas that filled the Home Depot Center stadium in Carson, California, stayed after the match ended to watch the team receive the silver trophy.

Fans are hopeful that the victory marks the start of a successful year for Chivas both in league play and in international competitions.
