Vergara Changes Not Known to Chivas Coaches
Jorge Vergara has gained a reputation as an outspoken owner, but for many, it's what he hasn't said recently that has been the most surprising. Without direct communication from Vergara, coaches are left to wonder what changes may be imposed.
At issue is a coaching staff shuffle that could affect both teams, but it seems that none of the four involved have been notified. There's a possibility that Preki, Chivas USA's current coach, could be welcoming an assistant coach he doesn't really know, or more drastically, lose his managerial position.
According to many outlets, including Guadalajara's official website, Vergara announced that Omar Arellano was coming from Atletico Madrid in Spain to be a new assistant coach to Efrain Flores in Guadalajara. A present assistant, Luis Manuel Diaz, would go to Chivas USA as their new assistant coach.
However, reports out of Mexico yesterday indicated that Flores was unaware of either the new arrival or the loss of his assistant until informed of Vergara's statements by local media.
One particular paper, the Record, found Diaz similarly surprised. He stated that he had not heard anything about being moved to the U.S., but if it was going to happen, he hoped to continue to learn there and one day return to Guadalajara.
Sources with Chivas USA indicated today that, despite Vergara's statements, there are no additions being made to Chivas USA’s coaching staff at this point.
One shocking statement was not reported on the Guadalajara website of the press conference, but did appear in another Mexican news outlet, El Informador. It indicated that Vergara said he also planned to appoint a new coach for the MLS team, one who would be announced shortly and work with Diaz at the helm of that club.
A club spokesperson confirmed that Preki signed a multi-annual contract extension with Chivas USA at the beginning of this year and remains the head coach.
