A Joao Plata strike and Osvaldo Alonso own goal led RSL to a 2-1 win over the Seattle Sounders at Rio Tinto Stadium.
The last time Real Salt Lake met the Seattle Sounders with first place on the line, Jeff Cassar's side fell flat — to the tune of a 4-0 loss.
Meeting under the same circumstances Saturday, it was RSL that gained the upper hand
Salt Lake got a Joao Plata strike and Osvaldo Alonso own goal early in the second half, then held off a late Seattle surge to take over first place in the Western Conference and the Supporters' Shield race.
RSL (11-4-9) now has a one-point lead on Seattle, though the Sounders (13-7-2) have two games in hand. The win brings Salt Lake's winning streak to three games and unbeaten run to six matches.
Plata's goal was his 11th of the season, extending a career high. Chad Barrett halved the deficit in the 72nd minute with his fifth tally of 2014.
