Beckerman out of All-Star game, Ridgewell called as replacement

The Real Salt Lake midfielder pulled out of the exhibition with a minor injury and has been replaced by a defender with three league appearances.

Real Salt Lake midfielder Kyle Beckerman is out of Major League Soccer's All-Star match against Bayern Munich with Portland Timbers defender Liam Ridgewell called to replace him, the clubs announced Tuesday.

Beckerman, a league veteran with 16 of his more than 300 MLS appearances coming this year, picked up an unspecified injury in a 1-0 win against Colorado this weekend. Ridgewell joined the Timbers in late June and has suited up three times for the club.

"Under the circumstances in losing a player at this late point in time, I felt it was best to pull in a player that wouldn't disrupt the other clubs and their preparation this week,” Timbers coach and All-Star manager Caleb Porter said in a news release. “Liam will be a quality addition."

The honor for the relative newcomer will make it easier for Porter to make sure no player plays a full 90 minutes in the exhibition after center backs Omar Gonzalez and Chad Marshall pulled out of the competition. Forwards Jermain Defoe and Robbie Keane also will miss the match after being named to the inital team.
