Pontius originally had surgery on the hamstring in November, but he suffered setbacks during preseason after being expected to return in time to begin the season. He may now miss the entire 2014 campaign.
It's a tough blow for DCU, as Pontius is a key contributor who was named to the MLS Best XI and All-Star team in 2012. The team's longest tenured player, the 26-year-old has has played in 123 games (106 starts) and recorded 27 goals and 16 assists in his MLS career.
Chris Rolfe, acquired earlier this month from Chicago, will likely continue to fill in at outside midfield for DCU, which is off to a 2-2-2 start this season.
