The Vancouver Whitecaps moved to 2-0-2 with a 2-1 win over the Houston Dynamo Saturday, winning their second of two home matches in the process.
Forward Kenny Miller scored from the spot for the game-winning goal to add to an opening strike from left back Jordan Harvey.
A 75th minute Ricardo Clark headed effort from a Brad Davis free kick would ensure a tight finish, but ultimately the Dynamo couldn't find an equalizer.
Harvey opened the scoring in the 14th minute, getting on the end of an Andy O'Brien header across goal to poke the ball past Tally Hall. Pedro Morales made the play, delivering a right-footed cross from the left straight onto O'Brien's head.
“Andy put it toward the goal and I was fortunate,” Harvey told reporters at BC Place following the match, before referencing the four goals he scored last season – a high total for a defender. “I just got a toe on it, so I was fortunate, really, and that's been, kind of last year as well. Getting in good spots, an opportunity presented itself and getting on the end of it.”
Miller would score what would ultimately turn out to be the game winner in the 58th minute from the penalty spot, but he had to take it twice, as referee Kevin Stott adjudged a Whitecap infringed into the area before the Scotsman made contact with the ball.
“It's a lot tougher when you've scored the first one,” Miller told reporters with a laugh following the match when asked if taking a spot kick twice increases the difficulty. “It's obviously easier if you miss [a pulled back penalty], but sometimes it happens. A little bit of encroachment and sometimes the referees will make you take it again.
“But fortunate enough, I managed to put it away.”
Darren Mattocks made the penalty, running at defender Kofi Sarkodie. The fullback ended up on the ground and handled the ball in the area after some fancy footwork from Mattocks.
“I thought he done fantastic,” Miller said of Mattocks. “All throughout the game he was a threat, in behind with his pace, and obviously it was his run that led to the penalty, so great performance.”
The Whitecaps will return to action next Saturday as they host the Colorado Rapids at BC Place.
