New England on Friday acquired former Colorado Rapids goalkeeper Matt Pickens through the waiver draft. Pickens, 31, was waived by Colorado on Thursday.
Pickens has spent 10 of his 11 professional seasons in MLS, playing for the Chicago Fire and Colorado as well as Queens Park Rangers in England. He had spent the past five years with the Rapids, starting for their 2010 MLS Cup-winning side, but made just two appearances last season before suffering a broken arm and seeing Clint Irwin seize the starting job.
Bobby Shuttleworth has started New England's first two matches of 2014, with offseason acquisition Brad Knighton serving as his backup. Third-stringer Luis Soffner has been loaned to the third-division Rochester Rhinos.
