The speedy midfielder brings 20 games of UEFA Champions League experience to San Jose. One day from opening their 2014 campaign, the San Jose Earthquakes reinforced their roster with some UEFA Champions League experience.
San Jose on Monday announced the acquisition of Portuguese midfielder Yannick Djalo on a season-long loan from Benfica. The speedy 27-year-old winger, who was capped by Portugal in 2010, made 20 appearances during the 2012-13 season while on loan to French side Toulouse.
"There was a lot of work and time spent scouting in the offseason, and we feel like we have a very good player in Yannick," Earthquakes coach Mark Watson said in a news release. "He adds a versatile, attacking dimension to our team. He can operate as an attacking midfielder, but also has the pace to get behind defenders."
Djalo worked his way through Sporting Lisbon's youth system before playing for the first team from 2005 to 2011, logging 20 matches and scoring one goal in the Champions League. He moved to Benfica in 2012 but played more for Toulouse, where he was loaned.
